Glancing at SAP cloud portfolio

Cloud

May 12, 2014

Are you looking to include cloud in your IT toolsets? Here are the four major switching factors you should know about.

  • Increased speed of delivery- Cloud enables faster delivery of solutions. These solutions are generally a set of standard applications (often basic vanilla functionalities) that can be customized very quickly.
  • Increased ability of Innovation- Cloud makes it easier to keep up with technology innovation. The newer versions of technology can be upgraded directly in the cloud without disrupting the business users.
  • Decreased upfront CapEx- with traditional software build and customization approaches, there is a requirement for spending upfront Capex for hardware and infrastructure. Cloud eliminates this need resulting in ease and simplicity.
  • Decreased dependency on IT skills- with traditional build and customization projects, there is a high dependency on complex IT skills. Cloud eliminates this need.SAP provides a portfolio of incredibly flexible, secure, scalable and easy to integrate cloud based solutions giving ultimate “freedom of choice” to customers according to their specific situations. These solutions are provided in 3 major segments.

Public Cloud

SAP provides a broad range of software as a service (SAAS) based cloud solutions. These solutions are provided across all major lines of business . Moreover, SAP provides platform as a service (PAAS) based solutions using HANA. This option enables customer to enjoy all four benefits (as described above) of enabling cloud in their environment.

Managed Cloud

SAP also provides a wide range of managed cloud solutions that consist of HANA enterprise cloud (HEC) for IT simplification, Suite on HANA (SOH ) for faster information and finally SAP Fiori on HANA for the lovely user-experience. With this option, you still get to eliminate the Capex requirement and IT dependency while enjoying the higher speed of innovation.

Hybrid Cloud

The ultimate option for many customers might be the Hybrid Cloud approach where customers manage a portfolio of on-premise and cloud based applications. And this one is my personal favourite.

For customers who manage a large portfolio of standard and highly custom solutions, this option is ideal as a starting point. They can immediately transform their standard applications to cloud while keeping the custom ones on-premise. SAP provides integration points between all cloud segments. And here is a bonus for customers who are just beginning to embrace cloud. SAP also provides cloud extensions for on-premise solutions enabling flawless integration between the cloud and on-premise applications.
